- Four Canadian troops earned Victoria Crosses in the Battle of Vimy Ridge. These soldiers were Private William Milne, who bombed a German machine gun squad and took the gun, Lance Sergeant Ellis Sifton, who single-handedly attacked and killed a German machine gun crew and a small squad of advancing German soldiers, Captain Thain MacDowell, who tricked 77 German troops into surrendering and giving up two machine guns by pretending that he had a large amount of soldiers behind him. Captain Macdowell also earned a medal at the Battle of the Somme. The final soldiers who received a cross was Private John Pattison, who bombed and killed 5 German machine gunners. All of these men except for Captain MacDowell died in the war.
